Vietnam, Cambodia to continue search for remains of fallen Vietnamese soldiers
VOV.VN - Vietnam and Cambodia will continue coordinating the search, recovery and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia until no further information on their burial sites remains.
The two sides will step up exchanges of delegations and coordinate efforts to review and collect information on fallen soldiers and their burial sites, as well as conduct surveys, inspections and assessments of cooperation between local authorities and search and recovery teams.
They will also strengthen public information campaigns and encourage people in both countries to provide information about fallen soldiers and their burial sites, particularly as available information is becoming increasingly scarce and less reliable.
Vietnam will maintain 11 search teams in Cambodian provinces and cities during the 2026-2027 dry season.
The two sides identified public cooperation as an important measure to expand search areas in the coming period.
Vietnam and Cambodia also agreed to direct relevant agencies and localities to renovate and preserve Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monuments in Cambodia, while managing and using the monuments in accordance with regulations and local customs, and ensuring they are suitable for domestic and international delegations visiting to pay tribute.
The agreements were reached at the 25th meeting of the Vietnamese and Cambodian Government Special Committees on the search, recovery and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia during wartime, held in Ho Chi Minh City on August 17.
They vowed to continue cooperation in a mission that has been carried out for many years, with Cambodian authorities at all levels and local residents playing an important role in providing information and supporting Vietnamese search and recovery teams operating in the country.
During the 2025-2026 dry season, Vietnamese search and recovery teams recovered the remains of 850 fallen soldiers in Cambodia. Both sides highly valued the result given the growing difficulty of obtaining information about burial sites.
The Cambodian side pledged to provide continued support and facilitate the operations of Vietnamese search and recovery teams. It will conduct more public information campaigns and encourage residents to provide information on burial locations.
On the occasion, authorised by the Prime Minister, the head of the Vietnamese Government Special Committee delegation handed over Vietnam’s 2026 financial support to the Cambodian Government Special Committee.
