Police dismantle transnational drug trafficking ring, arrests 403
VOV.VN - Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security has broken up a transnational drug trafficking ring that transported drugs from abroad into Vietnam for domestic distribution, arresting 403 people and seizing large quantities of drugs, firearms and other evidence.
The Ministry held a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on June 10 to announce a letter of commendation from the Prime Minister and present awards to units that achieved outstanding results in investigating Case 126N.
According to the ministry, the ring was involved in trafficking and transporting drugs from abroad into Vietnam for domestic distribution. Operating across national borders and 11 provinces and cities, the group used encrypted social media platforms to coordinate its activities and divided transportation and delivery operations into multiple stages to conceal its criminal activities. Most of those involved had previous criminal records, carried firearms and were prepared to resist arrest.
On January 14, the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department (C04) established Case 126N and coordinated with specialised units under the Ministry of Public Security, the Border Guard, Coast Guard, Customs authorities and police forces in 11 provinces and cities to investigate the network.
On April 15, the task force simultaneously launched operations, caught three key individuals in the act and apprehended the remaining links in the network across 11 provinces and cities. A total of 119 people were arrested on the first day of the operation.
To date, investigators have launched 45 criminal cases, prosecuted 230 defendants and imposed administrative penalties on 114 individuals. The remaining people are being classified and processed in accordance with the law.
According to the ministry, 126N is the first anti-drug operation in Vietnam to extend beyond national borders while covering 11 provinces and cities simultaneously. It also recorded the largest number of arrests made on the first day of a drug crackdown in the country's history while ensuring the safety of both law enforcement personnel and the public.
The success of Case 126N completely dismantled the criminal network, prevented large quantities of drugs from reaching major urban centres, curbed the emergence of crime hotspots and strengthened Vietnam's position in international cooperation against transnational crime.
