Northern and Central Vietnam brace for another strong cold spell
VOV.VN - Northern and Central Vietnam are preparing for another strong influx of cold air, reported the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).
Currently, a cold air mass is moving southward. In the North, scattered rainfall is observed, with temperatures generally ranging from 19–22°C, while the northeastern mountainous areas stay cooler at 15–17°C.
However, the cold front is expected to reach northeastern provinces on January 5, before intensifying overnight and spreading to the Northwestern, North-central, and central regions.
From the night of January 4 to January 5, northern provinces will experience light, scattered rain, with Hanoi continuing to see drizzle and light rain.
As a result, temperatures in northern and north-central regions will remain cold. Mountainous and midland areas of the North may experience severe cold, with the lowest temperatures in the Northern and North-central regions ranging from 10–13°C, northern mountainous areas 7–10°C, and some high-altitude spots falling below 5°C. In Hanoi, temperatures are expected to drop to 10–13°C with light rain.
From January 5–7, rain and showers are forecast from Ha Tinh to Da Nang and parts of Quang Ngai to Gia Lai, with localized moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms. Residents are advised to prepare for lightning, hail, and strong gusts. Northern mountainous areas should also watch for frost and ice formation.
Meteorologists say that January 2026 is likely to see cold air activity near the long-term average. Severe cold may appear extensively in Northern and North-central regions, accompanied by frost and ice in the mountains. From Nghe An to Hue and the south-central coast, widespread rain events are expected, and residents should take necessary precautions.
