Maysak nears Co To as Quang Ninh accelerates evacuations

According to Voice of Vietnam( VOV)’s Northeast bureau, light rain was recorded across Quang Ninh on the morning of July 4 under the impact of Tropical Storm Maysak. Provincial leaders directly inspected storm preparedness efforts in localities expected to be hardest hit, including Mong Cai, Hai Ha and Dam Ha.

According to Quang Ninh’s Civil Defence Steering Committee, at around 10:40 a.m. on July 4, the storm’s centre was about 50 km from Co To Island. The strongest winds recorded on the island were at force 5-6 (about 29-49 kph), while rainfall in the eastern part of the province averaged around 57 mm
Local authorities intensified efforts to alert residents, reinforce homes and protect property, while instructing vessel owners to anchor their boats properly to ensure safety. Security, rescue and relief preparations were also put in place under the “four-on-the-spot” principle.

Vice Chairman of Mong Cai 1 Ward People’s Committee Hoang Hai Long said the locality had activated its storm response plan and called on all vessels to move to safe shelter.

So far, 485 vessels have reached safe anchorage, while 86 households in vulnerable areas have been relocated to community centres and schools. Equipment and supplies have also been prepared to respond to worst-case scenarios.

Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh People’s Committee Nguyen Van Cong urged localities, particularly in the eastern region, not to lower their guard. He called for continued checks on flood-prone and landslide-risk areas as well as vulnerable infrastructure, while ensuring sufficient personnel and equipment for possible evacuations and emergency response.

Hai Phong has carried out emergency measures in response to Tropical Storm Maysak. At Bach Long Vi, the locality closest to the storm’s centre, all vessels have reached safe shelter.

According to the local Civil Defence Steering Committee, all 136 vessels in the affected area had anchored safely in the harbour shelter, including 20 smaller boats that were lifted ashore. No fishing vessels remain operating within a 15-nautical-mile radius of the island.

Chairman of Bach Long Vi special zone Dao Minh Dong,  said two command centres had been set up to handle any emergencies. Local authorities, together with military, border guard and police forces, are maintaining round-the-clock duty, closely monitoring weather developments and standing ready for rescue operations if needed.

According to the Hai Phong People’s Committee, border guards have coordinated checks and notifications for more than 1,600 vessels and over 4,400 workers on storm developments, guiding them to safe shelter. No vessels have lost contact.

On Cat Ba Island, all tourists have been moved to safe accommodation. In Do Son, local authorities have arranged accommodation for more than 500 tourists and suspended all marine tourism and entertainment activities.

Leaders of the Hai Phong People’s Committee instructed localities, particularly coastal areas, to thoroughly review response plans, maintain the highest level of preparedness, anticipate worst-case scenarios, ensure the safety of residents, protect dykes, infrastructure and agricultural production, and keep rescue forces ready for any emergency.
