Heatwave to return to northern Vietnam after thunderstorms ease
VOV.VN - Hot weather is expected to return to northern Vietnam from around August 9-10 as widespread rain gradually subsides, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
The weather agency said northern Vietnam, together with the provinces of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, will continue to experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms through August 8, with some areas likely to receive very heavy rainfall. Rainfall is set to ease from the afternoon of August 7, bringing more stable weather conditions.
From the night of August 8 to around August 16, northern Vietnam is forecast to see only scattered showers and thunderstorms. The northeastern region is likely to experience another spell of hot weather from around August 9-10.
In the north-central region, stretching from Thanh Hoa to Hue City, sunny conditions are expected during the day, with isolated hot weather. Widespread heat is forecast to develop across the northern and central parts of the region from around August 9-10.
On August 7, northern Vietnam and the north-central region are still expected to receive scattered showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall of 15-30 mm and locally more than 80 mm. Rain is anticipated to decrease later in the day.
Heavy rainfall was recorded across parts of northern Vietnam overnight and in the early hours of August 7. Rainfall totals exceeded 70 mm at several stations, including 129.8 mm in Lai Chau, 85.2 mm in Phu Tho and 79 mm in Hanoi.
Elsewhere, scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast for the area from Ha Tinh to Hue City and along the south-central coast. Localised afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected on August 7 from Ha Tinh to eastern Quang Ngai.
The Central Highlands and southern Vietnam will continue to experience afternoon and evening thunderstorms, with rainfall generally ranging from 15 mm to 30 mm and locally exceeding 80 mm. Rainfall is set to decrease from around August 12, with only scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms remaining.
The weather agency has warned that thunderstorms nationwide could still bring whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts. Residents are advised to monitor official weather forecasts and stay alert to hazardous weather conditions.
