Forest fire in Central Vietnam brought under control after two days

VOV.VN - A forest fire that broke out in Vietnam’s central Nghe An province has been largely brought under control after more than two days of intensive firefighting efforts, local authorities said on June 23.

According to officials, firefighting forces are continuing to extinguish remaining hotspots and maintaining round-the-clock monitoring to prevent the blaze from reigniting.

The fire started on the afternoon of June 21 in a hilly area of Khanh Son village of Thien Nhan commune, initially burning vegetation and undergrowth. Prolonged extreme heat, high temperatures and strong southwest foehn winds quickly fueled the spread of the flames.

Immediately after the fire was detected, local authorities mobilised hundreds of personnel, including military forces, police officers, forest rangers and local residents to the scene alongside firefighting vehicles.

As the situation became more complicated, the Nghe An Provincial Military Command deployed an additional 300 officers and soldiers on June 22 to support firefighting operations.

To contain the blaze, firefighters created a firebreak approximately 500m from the burning area to stop the flames from advancing further, despite the likelihood of affecting additional forest land.

Thanks to the coordinated response, the fire had been largely contained by around 4 a.m. on June 23, with no further risk of significant spread.

Preliminary estimates indicate that about 17 hectares of forest in Thien Nhan and Van An communes were affected by the fire.
