Floods, landslides hit northern Vietnam after days of heavy rain
VOV.VN - Days of torrential rain have triggered flooding, landslides and transport disruptions across several northern Vietnamese provinces, prompting authorities to intensify emergency response efforts as more heavy rainfall is forecast.
Heavy rain over recent days has caused widespread flooding and landslides across northern Vietnam, damaging infrastructure, disrupting transport and raising concerns over further flash floods and slope failures in mountainous areas.
In Dien Bien province, prolonged rainfall triggered multiple landslides that blocked roads and disrupted travel and the transportation of goods. Local authorities deployed workers and heavy machinery to clear debris and restore traffic while warning residents of continued risks of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas.
In Lao Cai province, rising river and stream levels inundated several low-lying areas in Muong Khuong commune. Local authorities have been working to deal with flooding and landslide damage, while warning that continued rainfall could trigger additional flash floods, landslides and debris flows.
Meanwhile, Son La province reported numerous landslides along national and provincial highways, causing traffic disruptions. Emergency crews have been removing fallen earth and rocks to reopen affected routes and ensure safe travel.
In Thai Nguyen province, heavy rain caused localised flooding in several communes and heightened the risk of landslides in mountainous areas.
A 12-year-old boy was swept away by floodwaters on July 9 while attempting to cross a low-water bridge in Phu Dinh commune. Local authorities immediately mobilised police, military personnel, militia forces and local residents to search for the missing child.
Relevant agencies have been instructed to closely monitor weather conditions, inspect residential areas exposed to landslide risks and prepare evacuation plans where necessary.
As heavy rain continues, local governments across the region have mobilised military units, police officers, militia forces and local officials to assist affected communities.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has instructed relevant agencies and power operators to ensure the safety of electricity infrastructure, hydropower reservoirs and mining facilities located in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides.
Meteorologists forecast that heavy rain is likely to persist in parts of northern Vietnam over the coming days, increasing the risk of flash floods, landslides and localised flooding.
