Cold air to end northern heatwave from June 8
VOV.VN - A cold air mass is expected to affect northern Vietnam and the north-central region from the evening of June 8, bringing widespread moderate to very heavy rain and thunderstorms and ending the recent heatwave across the North.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, northern localities continued to experience hot weather on June 7, with temperatures generally ranging from 35-36 degrees Celsius and exceeding 36 degrees Celsius in some areas.
The cold air mass is forecast to first affect the northern mountainous areas on the evening of June 8 before expanding to the Northeast, parts of the Northwest and the north-central region. Under its influence, the Northeast and Thanh Hoa province are likely to turn cooler from the night of June 8.
In Hanoi, moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with isolated areas receiving very heavy rainfall, are forecast from the evening of June 8 through the early hours of June 9. Cooler weather is expected from the night of June 8.
From the evening of June 8 to the night of June 9, heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for the Northwest region, northern Phu Tho province and Tuyen Quang province. The north-central region may see moderate to heavy rain, with isolated areas receiving very heavy rainfall. Other parts of northern Vietnam are forecast to experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with locally intense rainfall.
Forecasters warned that thunderstorms associated with the cold air mass could bring whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts, posing risks to agricultural production and potentially damaging trees, homes, transport infrastructure and other facilities.
Localised downpours may trigger flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes and flooding in low-lying areas.
At sea, northeasterly winds are forecast to strengthen in the northern Gulf of Tonkin from the night of June 8, generating rough seas and potentially affecting fishing vessels and other maritime activities.
