Chinese national arrested following convenience store robbery in Hai Phong
VOV.VN - A 41-year-old Chinese man has been arrested after holding a store clerk at knifepoint in the northern port city of Hai Phong and fleeing across multiple provinces, local police said on September 3.
The man, identified as Zhang Peng Ju, entered a convenience store on Do Nhuan Street in Hai An Ward at around 11:25 p.m. on August 27. Armed with a knife, Zhang threatened a 25-year-old female employee working alone and took cash from the register before escaping.
According to preliminary investigations, Zhang came to Vietnam in June 2026 and had been staying in Hai Phong to seek employment. Unemployed and low on funds, he admitted to targeting the store after noticing its high foot traffic.
Following the robbery, the Chinese national frequently altered his appearance, housing, and modes of transit across several provinces to avoid detection.
Police officers apprehended Zhang on September 1 while he was hiding in Moc Son Ward, Son La province.
Police seized 145 million VND (around US$5,800) believed to be connected to the robbery, along with other items and documents. Zhang confessed to the crime during initial questioning. Hai Phong police are continuing their investigation.
