Boat capsizes in Ha Tinh river, leaving four people dead
VOV.VN - A tragic boating accident on the Ngan Pho River in Vietnam’s Ha Tinh province left a woman and three children dead on June 2, local authorities said.
The accident occurred at around 5:45 p.m. in Vung Tron hamlet, Son Kim 1 Commune, when a small boat carrying four family members overturned while crossing the river.
The victims were identified as P.Th.H.N., born in 1990 and residing in Duc Tho Commune, Ha Tinh province; her daughter N.T.D.; and two relatives, P.Q.A., born in 2014, and P.M.T., born in 2018, both from Son Kim 2 Commune.
According to local officials, N. had brought her children and relatives to visit their maternal hometown in Son Kim 1 earlier that day. During the afternoon, she rowed the boat onto the river with the three children, while another child and a younger relative remained on shore.
Residents living near the river said they heard cries for help after noticing people struggling in the water. Locals immediately rushed to the scene and alerted authorities.
However, the accident happened in a deep section of the river, and by the time rescuers arrived, the victims had already been underwater for some time.
Rescue forces and local residents launched an urgent search operation along the riverbank as night approached.
Despite the efforts, all four victims were later recovered from the river without signs of life. Authorities confirmed the victims died from drowning.
News of the accident quickly spread throughout the area, leaving local residents devastated. The tragedy was particularly heartbreaking as all victims belonged to the same family, including three young children.
Tran Quoc Hoang, vice chairman of the Son Kim 1 Commune People’s Committee, confirmed the incident and said local authorities coordinated rescue operations and provided support to the victims’ family.
By the night, authorities completed on-site procedures and handed over the bodies to relatives for funeral arrangements.
The cause of the boat capsizing is under investigation.
