All 34 Vietnamese students win prizes at World Mathematics Invitational
VOV.VN - All 34 Vietnamese students competing at the World Mathematics Invitational (WMI) 2026 in Tokyo, Japan, from July 10 to 14 have won prizes, including two Diamond Awards and five Gold Awards.
The students, who competed in multiple-choice and written examinations across different grade levels, also received 9 Silver Awards, 11 Bronze Awards, and 7 consolation prizes.
Among Vietnam's top performers, Nguyen Quang Anh, a ninth-grade student at Japan International School, won a Diamond Award, ranked second worldwide in his grade and received The Star of the World trophy, awarded to the highest-scoring member of the Vietnamese delegation.
Another diamond medal went to Au Vu Thai Son, a third-grade student at Brighton College Vietnam, finishing third in the world in his age group.
Notably, Ha Nam Phong, a seventh-grade student at Hanoi-based Ngo Si Lien Secondary School, bagged a gold medal and received the Legend Award after bringing home gold medals at the WMI for three consecutive years.
Addressing the July 14 meeting with the Vietnamese delegation following their participation in the WMI 2026 in Tokyo, Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Pham Quang Hieu congratulated the students on their achievements and acknowledged the support given by teachers, parents, and the organisers.
The Ambassador stressed that the value of studying mathematics lies not only in winning medals but also in cultivating logical thinking, perseverance, the ability to raise questions, and the capacity to explore various approaches to problem-solving.
He also encouraged the students to continue pursuing mathematics while using international competitions as opportunities to make friends and learn about different cultures.
Representing the delegation, Vu Hai Lam, an eighth-grade student at Ngo Si Lien Secondary School, said the team's success reflected the students' determination as well as the unwavering support of their families and teachers.
According to Hai Lam, the Vietnamese team's performance helped showcase the image of Vietnamese students to the international community as hardworking, creative, and confident individuals. He said he would continue to nurture his passion for mathematics, and aim for even higher goals in the coming time.
