Professor Dr. Cheng Hanping, Executive Dean of the Institute of Regional and Country Studies and Director of the Vietnam Research Center at Zhejiang University of Technology said this in a recent interview with the press.
According to Professor Cheng, experts generally share the view that the recent visits of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam to several nations and his presence in New York for UNGA 81 signal the Vietnamese leadership's growing emphasis on a diversified and balanced diplomatic strategy to respond to the complex and unpredictable developments of the global landscape.
This proactive and diversified diplomatic approach is expected to create expansive development space, enabling Vietnam to boost friendly ties and bilateral relations in tandem with economic and commercial partnerships. Furthermore, proactively broadening its international presence not only embodies the principle of "strategic autonomy" underscored at the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, but also continuously elevates the country's global standing, laying an important foundation for the country to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting in 2027.
Reviewing the four key points highlighted by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam during his UNGA address, the Director of the Vietnam Research Center at Zhejiang University of Technology observed that they reflect the shared perspectives of the international community.
First, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam underscored cooperation and trust based on international law to redress disorder in the international architecture and address shortcomings in global governance, while affirming the central role and standing of the United Nations and the imperative of upholding its credibility.
Second, he emphasized the principles of equity, humanity, and inclusivity to address current deficiencies in global governance.
Third, he reaffirmed the importance of technology governance, issuing timely warnings about the ethical and legal challenges brought by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), as well as potential threats to humanity in the future.
Fourth, he asserted clearly that the world must continue to pursue multilateralism instead of unilateralism, specifically efforts to build a fair and inclusive world linked to the United Nations framework and based on international law.
Finally, the top leader highlighted Vietnam's stance: respecting international law, promoting dialogue, resolving disputes by peaceful means, and contributing to regional as well as global peace.
