PM calls for comprehensive military modernisation to meet future warfare challenges
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Le Minh Hung on July 2 called for the comprehensive modernisation of Vietnam’s military, saying the armed forces must strengthen strategic readiness, embrace technological transformation and be fully prepared for evolving forms of warfare and emerging security challenges.
Chairing a political-military conference to review defence and military tasks in the first half of 2026, the Prime Minister stressed that the armed forces must improve strategic forecasting, proactively assess risks and avoid being caught off guard under any circumstances.
He praised the military’s progress in researching, developing and applying advanced defence technologies, while highlighting the contribution of military-run enterprises to major national infrastructure and economic projects.
Calling for closer integration of defence with socio-economic development, he said greater attention should be given to defence-economic zones in border, island and remote areas. In addition, Vietnam should continue expanding defence diplomacy, participating in United Nations peacekeeping operations and contributing to international humanitarian efforts.
The Prime Minister urged the military to accelerate the development of a self-reliant, dual-use and modern defense industry, alongside greater investment in scientific research, innovation and digital transformation across the armed forces.
Looking ahead, he said military modernisation should extend far beyond upgrading weapons and equipment.
It is a comprehensive transformation covering personnel, organisation, strategic thinking, command systems, data, logistics and modern methods of warfare, he said.
The Government leader also stressed the need to enhance strategic advisory capacity on defence and foreign affairs, improve preparedness for both traditional and non-traditional security threats, and maintain readiness under all circumstances.
In addition to combat preparedness and training, he called on the military to continue caring for veterans and military families, and to accelerate efforts to recover, identify and repatriate the remains of fallen soldiers.
Concluding the conference, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that the Vietnam People's Army would continue fulfilling its mission of safeguarding national sovereignty, contributing to the country's long-term development.
According to a report presented at the conference, the armed forces have maintained a high level of combat readiness, closely monitored developments and provided timely advice to the Party and State in handling defence and security issues.
The military has closely integrated the fulfilment of military and defence tasks with socio-economic development; mobilised the strength of the entire political system and the people to build increasingly robust all-people national defence, military-region defence and defensive zones; strengthened inspection, surveillance and management of the country's airspace, maritime areas, borders, border gates, inland areas and cyberspace; and proactively, flexibly and effectively advanced international integration and defence diplomacy.
