Vietnam and Russia to deepen comprehensive strategic partnership
VOV.VN - Vietnam and Russia will strengthen coordination between their foreign ministries, address bottlenecks in bilateral cooperation and turn the high-level commitments into concrete results as they work to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The priorities were discussed at the Vietnam-Russia Deputy Foreign Ministerial-level Political Consultations held in Moscow on August 21 by Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko under the cooperation plan between the two foreign ministries.
The two sides reviewed bilateral ties since their previous consultations in Hanoi in February 2025 and discussed measures to address difficulties and advance cooperation, while coordinating preparations for high-level delegation exchanges, particularly during the remaining months of 2026.
Hang reaffirmed Russia is one of Vietnam’s important partners and called on the two foreign ministries to strengthen their coordinating role, helping relevant agencies effectively implement agreements reached by the two countries’ senior leaders.
Expanding cooperation in key areas
Recent high-level exchanges have given fresh momentum to bilateral ties. The two sides welcomed progress following visits to Russia by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam in May 2025, former Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in March 2026 and Prime Minister Le Minh Hung in June 2026. Vietnam and Russia have also identified new opportunities in energy, including cleaner and higher-technology areas, while maintaining cooperation in trade, science and education.
The two sides agreed to continue strengthening cooperation in politics, trade and investment, defence and security, science and technology, education, culture, tourism and local-level ties. They also plan to make better use of the Vietnam-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement to expand trade and investment.
Under the Vietnam-Russia Year of Science and Education, more than 100 activities are expected to be held, while tourism, cultural exchanges and people-to-people ties are also being promoted.
Russia held that it regards Vietnam as a reliable partner and an important priority in its Asia-Pacific policy, expressing confidence in Vietnam’s development goals.
Closer coordination on international issues
The consultations also covered regional and international developments. The two Deputy Foreign Ministers agreed to strengthen information sharing, coordination and mutual support at international organssations and multilateral forums, including the United Nations.
The two sides agreed to maintain the Political Consultations mechanism as an important channel for strengthening mutual understanding, supporting foreign-ministry cooperation and coordinating bilateral relations.
By reinforcing coordination mechanisms and addressing practical obstacles, Vietnam and Russia are seeking to turn high-level commitments into more tangible outcomes and give greater depth and effectiveness to their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
