Vietnam and Cambodia vow to give top priority to bilateral relations
VOV.VN - Vietnam and Cambodia continue to attach great importance to and prioritise bilateral relations, with parliamentary cooperation serving as one of the important channels for realising the commitments of the two countries’ top leaders.
The agreement was reached during talks in Hanoi on July 28 between Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and his visiting Cambodian counterpart Khuon Sudary.
Welcoming the Cambodian parliamentary delegation, Chairman Tran Thanh Man said the visit would help strengthen political trust, deepen cooperation between the two legislatures and advance agreements reached by senior leaders of both countries, including the outcomes of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam's state visit to Cambodia and the February 2026 meeting of the leaders of the ruling parties of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary conveyed greetings from King Norodom Sihamoni, Cambodian People's Party President Hun Sen, and other Cambodian leaders to Vietnam's leadership and people.
She praised Vietnam's socio-economic achievements and expressed confidence that the country would successfully achieve its long-term development goals. She also described Vietnam's economic reforms and administrative restructuring as valuable experiences for Cambodia.
Parliamentary cooperation remains a key pillar
During the talks, both parliamentary leaders exchanged views on domestic developments and future cooperation.
They reaffirmed that Vietnam and Cambodia continue to attach the highest importance to bilateral relations, with parliamentary cooperation serving as an important channel for implementing agreements reached by senior leaders.
They agreed to expand exchanges at all levels, improve bilateral cooperation mechanisms and strengthen legislative oversight of agreements between the two governments.
They also pledged to enhance cooperation in transport infrastructure, border crossings, logistics and supply chains while facilitating trade and investment, aiming to increase two-way trade to US$20 billion.
Both countries agreed to continue efforts on border demarcation and marker planting, alongside maintaining a peaceful, stable and cooperative border.
Expanding comprehensive cooperation
The two parliamentary leaders also agreed to coordinate activities marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cambodia (1967–2027), with a focus on promoting the long-standing friendship between the two peoples, particularly among younger generations.
They vowed to expand exchanges of legislative experience, strengthen cooperation between parliamentary committees, friendship groups, female lawmakers and young parliamentarians.
The two legislatures also agreed to continue supporting each other at regional and international parliamentary forums, as well as promoting the role of parliaments in advancing regional and global cooperation.
Chairman Man called on Cambodia to continue creating favourable conditions for people of Vietnamese origin living in Cambodia so they can enjoy legitimate rights, contribute to Cambodian society and strengthen friendship between the two countries.
He also proposed continued cooperation in locating, recovering and repatriating the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia.
On regional and international issues, both sides agreed to maintain close coordination in promoting peace, stability, cooperation and development while supporting ASEAN centrality and expanding collaboration within Mekong subregional cooperation mechanisms.
