Deputy PM Pham Gia Tuc wishes for deeper strategic partnership with Lithuania
VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc hosted Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys in Hanoi on July 28, expressing confidence that the latter’s visit will deepen traditional bilateral friendship and make the Vietnam-European Union (EU) Comprehensive Strategic Partnership more substantive.
Welcoming Budrys on his official visit and highly valuing the outcomes of his talks with Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung, Tuc congratulated Lithuania on its achievements in socio-economic development, European integration, and rising international standing.
Noting that relations between the two countries retain ample potential and space for development, Tuc proposed expanding bilateral cooperation across all fields, starting with political trust through delegation exchanges at all levels, particularly high-level ones.
He suggested effectively utilizing existing cooperation mechanisms, implementing the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), and enhancing business connections.
Tuc highlighted cooperation in areas where Lithuania has strengths, including the digital economy, fintech, energy (LNG infrastructure, renewables, power grid development and synchronization), seaports, shipping, logistics, and science-technology. Vietnam stands ready to create favorable conditions for Lithuanian enterprises to explore the market and invest long-term, he added.
He requested that Lithuania continue to voice support for remaining EU members to ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and advocate for the European Commission's early removal of the "yellow card" on Vietnamese seafood exports, particularly during Lithuania’s rotating EU presidency in the first half of 2027.
He also called for completing legal frameworks, such as the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement, an agreement on visa exemption for official passport holders, and agreements on education, training, and labor, while intensifying people-to-people exchanges and supporting the Vietnamese community in Lithuania.
Budrys conveyed an invitation from President Gitanas Nauseda for Party General Secretary and President To Lam to visit Lithuania, alongside greetings and an invitation from Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius to Prime Minister Le Minh Hung.
Hailing Vietnam’s impressive development achievements, its growing role in ASEAN, and advances in Vietnam–EU relations, Budrys stated that Lithuania highly values relations with Vietnam and stands ready to act as a bridge to the EU. During its upcoming EU presidency, Lithuania will prioritize EU-Vietnam cooperation projects in energy and transport infrastructure through the Global Gateway mechanism.
Agreeing with Tuc’s proposals, Budrys expressed Lithuania's desire to expand cooperation in trade, investment, energy, cybersecurity, logistics, and agriculture, adding that a Lithuanian business delegation will visit Vietnam to seek opportunities. He expressed interest in promoting labor cooperation, student exchanges, and cultural ties, while reaffirming support for the EVIPA and the removal of the IUU "yellow card."
Both sides emphasized strengthening coordination and mutual support at the United Nations and multilateral forums, advancing ASEAN-EU ties, and maintaining peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and aviation.
They reaffirmed that disputes must be resolved by peaceful means based on international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
