China sharply increases imports of Vietnamese coffee in first half
VOV.VN - Vietnam's coffee exports to China rose sharply in the first half of 2026, with both export volume and value rising strongly from a year earlier.
Exports to China reached 38,823 tonnes valued at nearly US$226.4 million, up 49.3% in volume and 76.1% in value from a year earlier. In June alone, China recorded the fastest growth among Vietnam's export markets and ranked as the third-largest buyer of Vietnamese coffee after Japan and Germany.
China Customs data indicated that the country imported 85,900 tonnes of coffee worth US$651.9 million in the first five months of 2026, up 0.3% in volume and 8% in value from the same period of 2025. China sourced coffee from 50 countries and territories during the period.
Vietnam exported 17,500 tonnes of coffee worth US$99.6 million to China, up 76.9% in volume and 87.1% in value year on year. As a result, Vietnam overtook Brazil to become China's second-largest coffee supplier after Ethiopia.
The average import price of Vietnamese coffee in China hit US$5,680 per tonne, compared with an average export price of US$4,557 per tonne for Vietnamese coffee shipped to other markets.
According to the Agency of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, coffee consumption in China is increasing because of changing preferences among younger consumers, urbanization and the expansion of coffee shop chains.
Citing Grand View Research, the agency said China's coffee market was valued at about US$3.26 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach US$5.36 billion by 2033, representing an average annual growth rate of 6.4% between 2026 and 2033.
According to the Agency of Foreign Trade, China will remain a promising market for coffee-exporting countries, including Vietnam. Future opportunities lie in Robusta coffee, instant coffee, ready-to-drink coffee and other convenient products that cater to younger Chinese consumers.
