California Waste Solutions proposes US$200mln waste-to-energy plant in HCM City
VOV.VN - California Waste Solutions (CWS), through its wholly owned subsidiary Vietnam Waste Solutions (VWS), has proposed expanding the Da Phuoc Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility (DPI) in Ho Chi Minh City with a 50-60 megawatt waste-to-energy plant.
The proposed plant would be part of a broader plan to expand the Da Phuoc complex into a larger waste treatment, recycling, resource recovery and power generation facility, CWS said.
According to VWS, the company is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the plan, with the proposed 50-60 MW waste-to-energy plant representing a new component separate from the approximately US$200 million already invested in the existing Da Phuoc complex.
VWS formally submitted the proposal in 2026, and the project is undergoing appraisal and seeking the necessary permits, the company added.
The Da Phuoc facility, covering nearly 220 hectares, handles around 6,500 tonnes of municipal waste a day, accounting for more than half of Ho Chi Minh City’s waste. The city is currently generating about 10,000 tonnes of waste a day.
Under its plan, the new waste-to-energy plant would process the remaining municipal waste after recyclable materials have been recovered, reducing the volume of residual waste sent to landfill.
CWS said the project is aligned with Vietnam’s goals of expanding renewable energy and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. However, the project remains under review and is still seeking regulatory approvals, meaning its investment parameters, technology and implementation timeline could be subject to further changes.
