Aviation sector posts double-digit growth with registered fleet hitting 258
VOV.VN - Vietnam's aviation market maintained a robust growth trajectory during the nine-month of 2026, handling nearly 102 million passengers, up 12% year-on-year, alongside a double-digit increase in cargo volume, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).
Throughout the reviewed period, international passenger traffic surpassed 39 million visits, a 14% increase, while domestic passengers hit more than 62 million, up 11%. Cargo throughput across Vietnamese airports rose by over 10% to approximately 1.4 million tons.
In September alone, airports served around 12.5 million passengers, surging 37% compared to September 2025. Vietnamese carriers transported over 46 million passengers in total during the nine-month period, marking an 8% increase year-on-year, with international passengers nearing 15 million and domestic passengers exceeding 31 million.
Alongside transport growth, the size of the aircraft fleet registered under the Vietnamese national flag has expanded to a record 258 units across 13 enterprises, spanning commercial, general, specialized, and training aviation as of September 22.
Vietjet leads the fleet with 107 aircraft, having recently added a wide-body Airbus A330 in September to support international network expansion. Vietnam Airlines ranks second with 94 aircraft, and recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus for five wide-body A350-900s. Together, the two major carriers account for 201 planes, posting close to 78% of the country's total registered fleet.
Other domestic carriers are also scaling up their fleets. Sun PhuQuoc Airways operates 21 aircraft and targets 33 by the end of 2026; Vietravel Airlines expanded its fleet to five aircraft following a recent delivery in September; while Pacific Airlines, VASCO, and other specialized operators maintain their respective fleet sizes to meet growing year-end travel demand.
