Vietnamese painting sells for US$3.69 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong
VOV.VN - “Conversation d’élégantes au Jardin” by Vietnamese painter Vu Cao Dam has sold for HK$28.96 million (US$3.69 million) at Sotheby’s Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction in Hong Kong on September 28, marking a notable milestone for Vietnamese art in the international auction market.
The work, created in 1939 in ink and gouache on silk, measures 85.6 by 114.5cm. It was offered as Lot 139 at Sotheby’s Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction in Hong Kong on September 28.
The painting is notable for its unusually large scale for a silk work and is considered one of the larger-scale silk paintings in Vu Cao Dam’s career.
The result also put the work ahead of Portrait of Mademoiselle Phuong by renowned Vietnamese artist Mai Trung Thu, which sold for HK$24.375 million, or more than US$3.1 million, at Sotheby’s Modern Art Evening and Day Sales in Hong Kong on April 18, 2021.
Conversation d’élégantes au jardin was among the works presented at Sotheby’s Hong Kong’s Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction, which featured modern and contemporary art from across Asia and beyond.
