Vietnamese community in Germany celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival
VOV.VN - Around 600 overseas Vietnamese of various generations, alongside numerous German guests interested in Vietnamese culture, attended the 2026 Mid-Autumn Festival organized by the Vietnamese Association in Dresden, Germany, creating a celebration rich in traditional atmosphere and community bonding.
The event drew numerous Vietnamese families from Dresden and neighboring areas, with various children's activities and performances highlighting national cultural identity.
Opening with a lion dance to vibrant drumbeats, the program recreated the familiar Mid-Autumn atmosphere in the memories of many generations of Vietnamese. Children then enjoyed artistic performances featuring Mid-Autumn songs and dances by community youths.
The festive atmosphere became more vibrant with children's games and the appearance of Hang Nga (the Moon Lady) and Chu Cuoi (Cuoi). Notably, the festival covered an area guiding children in making to he (traditional Vietnamese toy figurines). This served not only as a playground for children but also helped pass down familiar Mid-Autumn cultural traditions to the generation born and raised in Germany.
In his opening remarks, Bui Xuan Lam, President of the Vietnamese Association in Dresden, stated that organizing the Mid-Autumn Festival for children aimed not just to provide a joyful celebration, star lanterns, or gifts, but to create fond memories of family, community, and their Vietnamese homeland for the children.
According to Bui Xuan Lam, whether born and raised in Germany or anywhere else, the children should be encouraged to love the Vietnamese language, cherish their roots, and take pride in national cultural traits.
Therefore, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a celebration for children as well as an opportunity for generations of Vietnamese to gather, connect, and jointly preserve and pass down homeland cultural values to the younger generation.
He emphasized that community cooperation is vital to creating a memorable celebration for the children.
A notable highlight of the program was the commendation and rewarding of children with outstanding achievements in academics, culture, and sports, encouraging their continued efforts while demonstrating the community's care for the younger generation.
Alongside the participation of numerous overseas Vietnamese, the event welcomed many German guests interested in Vietnamese culture. The cultural exchange between Vietnamese and Germans in a traditional setting introduced the beauty of Vietnam's Mid-Autumn Festival to the local public while enhancing connections between the Vietnamese community and German society.
Attendees also enjoyed various traditional Vietnamese dishes and cakes, notably mooncakes (banh nuong and banh deo). The organizers presented children with Mid-Autumn gifts, including pretty lanterns, and invited them to join in the traditional feast (pha co) and lantern procession.
Thus, the 2026 Mid-Autumn Festival in Dresden was a children's celebration as well as an occasion for the Vietnamese community to reflect on and continue traditional cultural values in a multicultural environment as a contribution to preserving Vietnamese identity in Germany.
