VOV.VN - Designer Nguyen Phuc Tuan will open his debut show in Paris with Vietnamese Ao dai (traditional long dress), drawing on memories of Hue rain to connect Vietnamese culture with contemporary fashion.

His Numero 6: Vũ khúc cố đô collection, inspired by memories of rain in Hue, will be presented on September 30 as part of the Paris Fashion Week for the Spring/Summer 2027. He is scheduled to bring a collection of 30 looks divided into three chapters: Before the Rain, In the Rain and After the Rain.

The designs gradually move from forms evoking clouds and rain to images of the moments after the rain has passed. For the designer, Hue rain evokes not only sadness but also a sense of peace, romance and renewal. As a native of Hue, he chose the city’s rain as the starting point for the collection.

Rather than placing traditional motifs or images of Hue’s architecture directly onto the garments, Tuan distils and transforms them into a contemporary fashion language.

The collection’s key elements are architectural silhouettes combined with handcrafted embellishment techniques. Sculptural blocks are treated like structures, evoking clouds and raindrops.

Certain details draw inspiration from Hue culture, such as floating lanterns, moss-covered surfaces after the rain, and narcissus flowers. Accompanying accessories include hand-painted fans featuring cloud motifs, inspired by Cửu Long Ẩn Vân (Nine Dragons Hidden in Clouds) artwork. The opening music incorporates one part of the song Mưa trên phố Huế (Rain on the Streets of Hue).

Beyond incorporating images and memories of Hue into his designs, Tuan has chosen Vietnamese silk as the main material for the collection. The choice reflects his effort to demonstrate that Vietnamese materials can meet the technical and aesthetic demands of international fashion.

The collection’s voluminous silhouettes are crafted from lightweight, sheer materials, creating a sense of lightness and movement. Pastel purple runs throughout the collection, drawing on the hues of Hue’s sunset and combined with shades of blue, white and black.

One of the most time-consuming pieces is a wedding dress named Merci Paris, which took around two months to complete with hand-crafted embellishments.

The dress depicts iconic Paris landmarks, including the Palace of Versailles, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower, alongside symbols of Hue such as Trang Tien Bridge, Thien Mu Pagoda and the imperial tombs.

The Huong River in Hue and the Seine River in Paris serve as a visual link between the two cities, accompanied by a “golden rain” motif inspired by Hue.

The fashion show will take place at an old château in central Paris, near the Eiffel Tower, in an architectural setting chosen to complement the spirit of the collection.
